Route recording

Route recording is an optional paid feature that records the way you went and shares it only if you go quiet or ask for help. Chillswitch never shows anyone a live position.

When a route can be recorded

  • A "Going out?" outing, if you turn on Include route in the alert.
  • A late check-in, if you turned on Record your route if you miss a check-in. This starts only while the app is open.
  • Distress, if you choose Record my route and share it with my safety contacts until I check in.

How it works

  • While recording, your phone samples your location and seals it on the phone. Your phone shows its normal location indicator the whole time (a blue bar on iPhone, a persistent notification on Android).
  • Chillswitch never requests "Always" or Android background-location permission.
  • Routes are released to contacts only if the alert reaches the step you chose, and are deleted when the trip closes.
  • Recording uses more battery.

What contacts see

The way they went: a few points spread across the trip, each linked to a map, with distance and duration. It ends where the phone last reported, not where the person is. If the route is incomplete, the app says so.

Why you might not see a route

If a route does not start, the app says why: location is off for the app, no contact can open it yet, none of your steps shows contacts a route, your plan does not include recording, or the phone could not turn on location updates.

Refused on purpose

Live location to anybody, routes on a recurring schedule, and routes an administrator can require are not features of Chillswitch.
