Location settings

Location is optional and off by default. When you use it, Chillswitch attaches where you were, never where you are. It is sealed on your phone, so Chillswitch cannot read it.

Where to find it

Open Settings > Location. Controls are grouped by situation.

On a check-in ("If you miss a check-in")

  • Share where you were. A location is logged when you press the check-in button and is shared with your safety contacts only if you miss a check-in. Attaching a place is part of a paid plan.
  • Record your route if you're late. When a check-in goes unanswered, your phone starts recording your route, but only if the app is open. It is shared only if you go quiet and uses more battery. If nobody opens the app, nothing is recorded.

When you're going out

  • When you're going out. Attach a place on check-ins using Going out?, only shared if you go quiet.
  • Share your route when you're going out. Records your route during the outing and includes it if you go quiet.

When you ask for help

  • Share location on distress signal.
  • Record my route when I ask for help. Starts when you press the distress button and ends when you check in.

Rules that always hold

  • Location is asked only when you press the button (or distress), and only while the app is open, except for the optional route recording described below.
  • If your location cannot be pinpointed, your check-in still goes through without one.
  • Nobody can watch you move. Routes stay sealed and open for contacts only if you go quiet and the alert reaches the step you chose.
  • A location can be stale. The alert says this is where you started, not where you are.
  • If location permission is off, nothing is attached. Change it in your phone's settings.
  • Pause location stops check-ins from attaching a place until you resume. Asking for help still can.

What your contacts see

A past location with the time, how long ago, and accuracy (for example, "accurate to about 20 m"), with an Open in maps link. See receiving an alert.
